Rocking Chair
Rocking Chair
The Rocking Chair is an American furniture icon. Since its invention by Benjamin Franklin in 1733, over 680 million rocking chairs have been built around the globe. Since its inception there have been many innovations to the original rocking chair design but the basic components: rockers, legs, seat, arms, remain unchanged.
Glider Rocker
One major innovation to the original rocking chair design is the glider rocker. The glider rocking chair has a base which is immobile. The chair itself rests upon this base and glides fore and aft, simulating the motion of a traditional rocking chair. Glider rockers help prevent the dreaded cases of having an errant foot or tail caught beneath a rocker.
Indoor Rocking Chair
An indoor rocking chair retains most of the elements of the traditional design, but has subtle changes for today’s comfortable, climate controlled indoor environment. This includes comfortable rocking chair cushions which soothe an aching back and bottom. Indoor rocking chairs also commonly have padded arms and are constructed of materials not durable enough to survive the elements. In extreme cases you will find an upholstered rocking chair which provides the ultimate in indoor seating comfort.
Outdoor Rocking Chair
Modern outdoor rocking chairs continue many of the rustic traits of their predecessors. They are constructed of durable materials and have a romantic charm which makes one recall the days of yore. They commonly mimic many elements of antique rocking chairs in the choice of materials and design.
Child’s Rocking Chair
The child rocking chair appeared almost immediately. The affection of children for the rocking chair was noticed early on and rocking chairs built specifically for children were released for sale within months of the original.
Modern Rocking Chair
The modern rocking chair is the culmination of almost 300 years of innovation. It combines all of the comforts of modern furniture with the simply rocking pleasure of centuries past.
